4 Disruptive Trends for Higher Education in 2024

Posted on February 8, 2024

📌More colleges will close or merge
According to Bain & Company report, two-thirds of institutions must shift their business models to survive and thrive as many found themselves on shaky financial ground and solvent through the 2023 academic year.

What’s driving this? The decline in enrollment in higher education, disruptive alternatives to higher education, demographic declines, and the continued rise in spending by higher education.

📌Online learning will continue to have its moment, but a shakeout is beginning.
As enrollment in accredited higher education institutions as a whole has declined, enrollment in online programmes has continued to increase.

“No longer will it be enough to simply have an online program. Students will focus on value, which in many cases will result in a focus on price. Ultimately, colleges and universities won’t be able to price their online programs at the same rate as their brick-and-mortar ones and use them to prop up unsustainable campus operations.”

📌Big colleges and universities will get bigger
In the world of online learning, scale matters when the value is clear. It allows colleges to invest more in the learning design and student support in their programmes.

📌Apprenticeships will gain more traction outside of the trades
More individuals are now looking for meaningful alternatives to a good job than through traditional higher education that bears less risk.

Digital pedagogy

On-line and blended class delivery is not the similar to a campus oriented.

Step1. Assessment of current course's syllabi and curriculum is necessary. What can be moves to online and how? What can be added - interactive components, self-paced learning tools, mutual collaboration activities, etc.?

Step 2. Perform "as is - to be" analysis. Where are we now, and where do we need to be?

Step 3. What CAN we do - assess level of readiness of teachers/professors, students, administrative staff. Update syllabi.

Step 4. Decide on LMS and communication tools. What can be delivered online, which supportive technologies do we need?

Step 5. Perform a pilot on a random groups of students and teachers. Are they ready to move online, can students organize their studies without direct supervision. What assistance is necessary - both methodological and technical.

Step 6. Assess pilot results. Finalize syllabi and curriculum. Start with predefined study programs.

Hybrid learning achievements

Posted on May 4, 2022

Broad implementation of hybrid learning finds new proofs. Hybrid learning provides more flexible approach for both students and professors by delivering studies partially on campus and partially on-line - either "live" or asynchronous.
In the EDUTech brief research Ms. Tan Shui-Min, Chief IT Officer of National University of Singapore, stated how hybrid approach helped to move seamlessly during COVID lockdowns. She highlighted that "VR and AR can create a new kind of learning environment for the student and one that can take place any time of the day."
OESI started providing audit and certification in hybrid learning since Fall 2020 - purchase at https://oesi.pro/applying

Video resolution for virtual learning

Posted on October 28, 2021

Video quality for learning purposes is one of the most challenging questions. On one hand most of students watch youtube and oter streaming services with super high quality video.
On the other hand, high-resolution video can be hardly accessed in many regions of the world.
Unis and business schools should thoroughly examine the following questions to decide which resolution(-s) are appropriate:
- course/content type
- students' locations
- video duration.
Good practices can include, but not limited to:
- have 2-3 videos with different resolution
- decompose videos to smaller pieces.

Omni channel online learning

Posted on July 20, 2020

Best practice by Stefan Brahmer.

 Original post at LinkedIn

Having done a bunch of virtual classroom sessions now, I have come to the following insights I would like to hear your views upon

Insight 1 - it seems that there is not just one tool that fits all needs.

My primary tool is Zoom, but ITSec constraints have also forced me to use MS Teams and Cisco Webex Training. Looks like our training solutions need to become omni-channel ready.

For our stuff this means Video Chat and breakout rooms with screen sharing capabilities

Insight 2 - the quality drops when participants turn off / are not turning on the video camera during the class

Interactions and communication during the class takes a hit if there is no visual. I had to convince some individuals to try and what helped was to show them how to use virtual backgrounds (in MS Teams and Zoom that’s a generic feature)

Insight 3 - 4 hour segments are possible

I know that most folks prefer max 2 hour segmentation of class content, but that doesn’t work with our stuff if we want maintain the learning flow.

If you have a good number of team exercises and interaction in breakout rooms - it is quite possible to run 4 hours segments in my experience.

Interested to hear what your insights might be ?

Probably other opinions on how to improve the client experience.

Stay well!
